TWO entrepreneurial youngsters managed to raise nearly £200 for terminally-ill children in just one hour by running a sweet shop.

Nine-year-olds Emily Martin and Kirsty Ellacott set up a sweet stall in a street in Chesterton this weekend to raise money for Helen and Douglas House children's hospice in Oxford.

With just one hour's work the kids conjured up enough support from sweet-tooth shoppers to raise £190 – and money is still coming in.

Chesterton Primary School pupil Emily said: "I wanted to do the fundraiser because my friend was poorly with cancer and then moved to Helen and Douglas house.

"I wanted to help make the children there feel more comfortable and to give them some happy times.

"It took quite a lot of planning, sorting out the sweets and making posters and price lists but it went amazingly.

"I never thought I would raise £190 - I was aiming to make £40-50, I want to thank all the lovely people who came and donated so generously."

The duo set up shop and drew people in to buy sweets, teas and ice creams and hope to do more fundraising in the future for Oxford Children's Hospital with plans for more advertising and letters for their fellow pupils' book bags.

Emily's mum Jo Martin added: "The girls both worked so hard and did really well, I have never seen so many cars in Chesterton - it was like a village fete.

"We will be taking the money into the nurses at Helen and Douglas House hospice on Friday."
