A NEW zipwire, roundabout, trampolines, see-saws and more are due to be installed at Wantage Recreation Ground in a matter of weeks.

More than £70,000 worth of new play equipment has been purchased after a campaign by parents to replace outdated slides and swings.

Wantage charity champion Ray Collins helped raise £10,000 towards new gear and Vale of White Horse District Council has paid the other £60,000.

The council will also be spending more than £70,000 on revamping the Manor Road park's toilet blocks by the end of May.

Dozens of mums and dads celebrated the good news when it was announced on the Wantage Recreation Ground Revamp Project Facebook page.

Debbie Strohbach wrote: "Great news. Look forward to my grandchildren using it. Congratulations."

Katherine Staples said: "Looks amazing. Will be fantastic to have it installed in time for the summer."

The full list of new equipment ordered by the Vale is: a new Juniors Activity Aparatus with rope bridge, scramble nets and slide, nest swing, a single point swing, a large dish roundabout, a four-seat seesaw, the zipwire, a spring seesaw, trampolines, toddler activity aparatus and a slide, a new "inclusive" roundabout, a rock spinner, a "ladybird springie", a back-to-back roundabout and a spring seesaw.

Mr Collins, who helped launch the campaign for new play equipment with other parents, said he was "thrilled" the Vale had forked out to improve the park.

He said: "We have been working on this for two-and-a-half years and although our numbers have dwindled our commitment and dedication has not.

"Now, finally, we have a varied and exciting range of new pieces of equipment for the toddler area and a newly created junior area for thousands of children to enjoy now and in the future.

"We were all very concious of getting maximum value for our money which isn't easy with so many regulations and high costs of playground equipment but compared to several other quotes the chosen one delivered on quality and quantity.

"We are all thrilled with the amount of new equipment coming to the park more than we thought with the funds we had plus a modern clean fresh toilet block that will no longer be an embarrassment."
