ALCHESTER were denied a place in the first round of the Oxfordshire Shield by a dramatic last-minute converted try at lower league side Didcot.

Josh Witts slotted a conversion from the touchline with the last kick of the game to earn the BB&O Championship outfit a 12-11 victory in the preliminary round tie.

It is the second time this season that Alchester have been denied victory after Abingdon denied them 30-28 in the BB&O Premier Division three weeks ago.

After a scoreless first half, Alchester took a 3-0 lead through an Adam Thompson penalty, before Didcot replied with an unconverted try scored by Craig Phillips.

Alchester then made it 11-5 when Mario da Silva crossed and Thompson slotted another penalty.

But Didcot piled on the pressure and a catch and drive led to captain Ronnie Booth going over.

Witts then held his nerve to convert from out wide.

Alchester return to league action on Saturday, hosting Chesham.

Bicester, who had a break last weekend, travel to Beaconsfield in Southern Counties North.
