British comedy East is East will complete its UK tour at the Oxford Playhouse later this month.

Opening on Monday, September 21, for a week-long run, the play stars Pauline McLynn, who played Mrs Doyle in television’s Father Ted and librarian Libby Croker in comedy Shameless.

Set in the 1970s in Salford, East is East is the story of Pakistan-born chip shop owner George ‘Genghis’ Khan, his British Roman Catholic wife, Ella, and their seven children.

While George is determined to give his family a traditional Muslim upbringing, despite all the challenges and chaos that family life brings, his children have other ideas.

George is the patriarch of the Khan family and puts his image before their happiness.

His wife Ella, played by award-winning actress McLynn, struggles to keep the peace between her husband’s ideals and her children’s free will. A family saga, performed with quick wit, the play touches on subjects including domestic violence, arranged marriage, conflict and homosexuality as well as race and ethnicity in a controversial political period.

The play is directed by Sam Yates with design by Tom Scutt.

East is East, written by BAFTA nominee Ayun Khan Din, was made into a highly successful 1999 film of the same title.

In the film version, George was played by actor Om Puri, while Linda Bassett played Ella.

The movie was nominated for and won a string of awards, including the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the BAFTA Awards, Best Comedy Film at the British Comedy Awards, and the International Indian Film Academy’s special award for Outstanding Achievement in International Cinema Ticket prices start at £15 and are available from the box office on 01865 305305.
