NURSES, teachers, academics and students are being invited to protest against “austerity” cuts at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.

Members of the Oxford and District Trade Union Congress (TUC), Unison, Banbury GMB and the Oxford Peoples Assembly Against Austerity are organising a protest outside the Manchester Central on Sunday, October 4.

Previously, the groups sent a contingent of protesters from the county to the End Austerity Now march in London in June. The march saw 250,000 people lobby against certain policies pursued by the Government.

Unison representative for Oxford Health, and Warneford Hospital nurse Ian McKendrick, said: “There is an urgent need to continue to mobilise in the face of an escalation in Government attacks and growing inequality.”

The group will be protesting against proposed new sanctions on trade unions, the £12 billion welfare cuts announced by Chancellor George Osborne in June, belt-tightening in the NHS, the increase of university tuition fees, and the housing crisis.

Mr McKendrick added: “We have had five years of austerity.

"Now We’re being told there will be another five years of austerity with £12 billion of welfare cuts, further privatisation of the NHS and a growing inequality. If people want anything to change for the better they’re going to have to get involved in the movement trying to change things.”
