The stage version of Academy Award-winning film The Producers is coming to Oxford’s New Theatre.

Opening on Monday, the show, which has been staged both in the West End and on Broadway, runs until Saturday, July 4.

The musical comedy is based on Mel Brooks’s 1967 hit film, and won 12 Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards after it was adapted for the stage.

It is the story of New York theatrical producer Max Bialystock, who has become impoverished by a string of flops and recruits downtrodden accountant Leo Bloom to help him pull off Broadway’s greatest scam.

Together, they aim to produce the worst show in history and run away to Rio with the millions they earn, but they learn that showbusiness can always find a way to kick you in the teeth.

Featuring a mix of eccentric characters and the classic song Springtime For Hitler, some fans laud The Producers as the funniest Broadway musical of all time.

The cast for this new tour includes comedian Jason Manford as timid accountant Leo Bloom.

Broadway and West End star Cory English reprises his role as Max Bialystock, which he has played in London’s West End.

Tiffany Graves joins the company as Ulla the object of Leo Bloom’s affections, and comedian Ross Noble plays Franz Liebkind, the short-fused, carrier pigeon-keeping former Nazi, who is brought on board by Bialystock and Bloom to help in their plot to put on the worst musical of all time.

Olivier-winning actor David Bedella plays flamboyant director Roger De Bris, chosen an attempt to ensure Springtime for Hitler is a flop.

Producer Adam Spiegel said: “It’s filled with fabulous costumes, glamorous dancing girls, hysterical show tunes and an incredible live band.”
