STUDENTS at Banbury and Bicester College have been put in the driving seat for a lesson about road safety.

Fire crews from Bicester and Kidlington simulated a road accident at the college’s Bicester campus last Tuesday as part of road safety charity Brake’s national road safety week.

Carterton student Arran Masters, 18, volunteered to sit in the car as fire crews removed its windows, door panels and roof before lifting him to safety using a board for people with spinal injuries.

Arran said: “It was a bit surreal sitting there as all this metal was being chewed up around you.

“The noise as the glass was going made me jump. Things like this do make you think differently.

“I wouldn’t have liked it if this had really been my car.”

Nick Lanigan, managing director of Clearview Traffic Group, which sponsored the course, said: “A young driver aged between 17 and 24 is the most vulnerable driver in the UK and we hope that this experience will help the students understand the consequences of taking unnecessary risks.”
