A LANE of the M40 had to be closed yesterday when three geese got onto the carriageway.

The birds were spotted on the motorway between junction 8a for Oxford and junction 9 for Bicester at about 8.30am.

They were reported to Thames Valley Police by seven different motorists, some believing them to be swans.

A spokeswoman for the police said a rolling road block was put in place to help clear them from the road, with some drivers leaving their vehicles to try to shoo them off the road.

But she added that the birds were eventually removed by the Highways Agency, whose officers arrived and had to close one lane.

By 8.50am the road had reopened and no-one was injured in the incident.

It comes after an emu was hit by a car and killed on Tuesday after it escaped from a garden in Boars Hill.
