THE A40 is now cleared after a six-vehicle collision at the Wolvercote roundabout.

Police were called to the scene at the BP garage at 8.30am.

A spokeswoman said six cars - Silver Dihatsu, Silver Jaguar, grey BMW X3 , red Hyundai, blue Peugoet 207, red Nissan Micra - were involved and the road is still blocked both ways.

They are waiting for four cars to be recovered and say only minor injuries have been reported.

Three ambulances were sent to the scene and a spokeswoman for the ambulance service said three people had been taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Redwatch Abingdon has tweeted to say they were called to the collision while on their way to training. They said two people have been cut free and taken to hospital.

Traffic sensors show heavy traffic in the area as a result with delays all the way up Woodstock Road to the Peartree Interchange, along the A44 to Yarnton. The A34 is heavily congested in the area and there are delays along Banbury Road and Woodstock Road into Oxford and along Botley Road.

There were earlier reports of another collision at the Headington roundabout. Police were called at 9.40am to London Road after a lorry and an Audi were involved in a collision.

They said no injuries were reported and it blocked the road but traffic is now easing in the area.

All four roads approaching the roundabout look congested.

The A40 at Aston Hill near Lewknor is also closed both ways due to a fallen tree betwen B4009 and Kingston Hill. Thames Valley Police were called at 9.25am to a tree blocking the road. They have informed the Highways Agency and the road is closed in both directions while the tree is cleared.

Oxford Bus Company and Stagecoach have both said they're experiencing major delays on city services due to traffic congestion.

Stagecoach said: "A road traffic collision on the Wolvercote roundabout, has led to the A40 being closed between Eynsham and Cassington Turn causing major disruption to services S2, S3 & 18.

“The collision is also causing knock on delays to Kidlington services 2, 700 and services S4 & S5 along the Banbury Road.”

There is slow traffic and delays on the A34 southbound between junction 9 of the M40 and the Hinksey Hill interchange.

There is also slow moving traffic on the  A4142 Eastern Bypass.  A contraflow system is still in place at the Kennington roundabout as part of changes to the road layout.

Oxford Bus Company spokesman Phil Ashworth said: “There are major problems on all the main routes in and out of Oxford this morning.

"The road works on London Road in Headington are causing major delays. There are temporary traffic lights on Hythe Bridge St and the continuing  road works in the Redbridge area are still causing significant problems.

"Not surprisingly motorists are trying to find alternative routes and so Botley Road, Banbury Road and Woodstock Road are  badly affected too.

"There are delays of up to 25 minutes currently on some routes. Because of the accident on the A40 tailing back to Wolvercote roundabout, traffic is very heavy in the area.

"We can only apologise for any inconvenience it causes our passengers.”

Works to widen and resurface the A420 London Road in Headington have also started today.

The works – to improve bus and cycling access – is expected to last eight months.

County Councillor David Nimmo Smith, cabinet member for transport, said of the Headington works: “The improvements will benefit residents and businesses in the area and the travelling public will be pleased by the prospect of a higher quality and more durable road surface.

“The enhanced facilities for cyclists and buses will help improve journey times and reliability between Thornhill Park and Ride and Headington.

“People have been calling for these improvements for a long time and it has taken a great deal of effort and planning to pull everything together so that we can get the improvements and the road reconstruction done in sequence.”
