HALTON Castle and Norton Priory will be open for free on Sunday, September 14 to celebrate heritage open day.

Susan Brownrigg, learning and community manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity not only to visit the museum and garden for free, but also Halton Castle which is only open on special occasions.

“Visitors can discover how the Normans built the castle, who lived there and other mysteries and stories.

“There will be time to explore the surviving features including the walls, ‘lock ups’ and sunken garden and of course the elevated position allows a fantastic view of the River Mersey and local landmarks.”

Visitors can discover 900 years of history at Norton Priory including the giant St Christopher Statue now with 3D projection, woodland and a walled garden.

Medieval re-enactors from Cheshire Levy will chat to visitors in character. Meet Reverend Mother, Star the greyhound, the archer and the apothecary/surgeon and find out more about their lives.

A Medieval knight, Tudor lady , a Victorian housekeeper and First World War land girl will be at Halton Castle.

Visitors can try on costumes, handle objects, have a guided tour and follow trails.

Vale Royal Falconry will be flying birds of prey.

There is free parking at Norton Priory and a free shuttle bus will run between the castle and the museum car park at regular intervals.

Alternatively join the ranger on a guided walk between Norton Priory and the castle.
