THE names of 20 soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars were read out at as part of a remembrance project.

The latest Turning the Pages ceremony was held at the Military Chapel, Christ Church Cathedral, St Aldate’s, on Saturday.

The ceremony is held four times a year and began in 2002 to remember those who died while serving in county regiments.

The 20 were from the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars and the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.

The names read out from the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars were: Ernest Roads, William Edward Roberts, Frederick Joseph Rouse, Leslie William Saunders and Matthew Francis, who fought and died in the Frist World War, and John James Hatchett, Kenneth Parker, George Quigley, John William Rymill and William Lionel Howard Sansbury, who fought and died in the Second World War.

Names from the Oxfordshire and Bucks Light Infantry read out were: Jesse Jones, Edward George Bemi, William Henry Fossey, Samuel Miller and George William Parker, who fought and died in the Frist World War, and Lionel Charles Goodwin, Raymond Leslie Moore, David Pottinger, Reginald Phillip Sherwood and Ernert James Warren, who fought and died in the Second World War.

Organiser and chairman of the Oxford branch of the Royal Green Jackets Association Terry Roper, above, said around 30 people attended. He said: “It does mean an awful lot, because the sacrifices that were made in those two wars were immeasurable.”
