THE vital work of the Community First Responders cannot be underestimated.

As their name suggests, they are first on the scene of many emergencies, before paramedics can arrive.

The Golden Hour is often referred to as the most important time after an emergency with aid then most likely to prevent death.

The first responders are at the sharp end of this with patients often suffering life-threatening injuries.

Using their training, the volunteers can give CPR or use a defibrillator on the patient.

Many more deaths could be prevented with more volunteers.

It is hard to think of a more worthy way to spend some free time.

Knowing you have the ability to save a life is one that should be treasured.

You never know when it might become necessary, whether responding to a 999 call as one of the first responders or elsewhere such as on holiday or walking down the street.

All 1,700 volunteer first responders across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Hampshire deserve recognition for their efforts.

And they should act as role models for others to sign up and help save more lives.

Sorry to hijack the thread chaps, but is there a reason why comments on the 'polystyrene fast food boxes to be banned' story have been locked down?
