THE new leader of Didcot Town Council has called for a date to be set for the demolition of the power station’s iconic cooling towers.

Eleanor Hards said the demolition will be a historic day for Didcot and it would be a shame for anyone to miss it.

Owner of the Didcot A site, RWE npower, has said the bulldozing will happen this year but has not yet said when.

Labour council member Mrs Hards said: “I very much wish they would give us a date so we could clear our diaries.”

The coal-powered station closed in March last year.

RWE npower has appointed a demolition contractor, Birmingham-based Coleman and Company, to take down three of the six 325ft southern towers nearest to Didcot.

RWE npower spokesman Dan Meredith said the firm was still working with stakeholders to agree a date.
