A LORRY driver has been fined after admitting breaking a road weight limit.

Oxfordshire County Council Trading Standards team said John Johnson drove his large Mercedes heavy goods vehicle – with a weight of up to 26 tonnes – on the B4015 from Chiselhampton to the Golden Balls Roundabout in September last year.

But the stretch of road has a limit of 7.5 tonnes and Johnson, 50, was stopped by a patrol officer from Trading Standards.

Johnson, of Kensington Close in Abingdon, admitted contravening the traffic order and was handed the £200 fine at Oxfordshire Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the county council said.

He was also ordered to pay £125 costs and a £20 victims’ surcharge.

The council’s Trading Standards prosecutor Anu Prashar yesterday welcomed the conviction and said drivers should obey road weight limits She said: “Weight limits are there for a reason and this case shows that those flouting restrictions can be caught and fined.

“We routinely have patrols around the county and when we spot drivers who are breaking weight limits we will investigate and bring them to court for prosecution.”
