THEY have spent a year creating their stunning statues and now they will be finally unveiled in an annual exhibition.

But for Bicester Sculpture Group, this year’s show will be more poignant.

Just weeks ago they lost one of their most highly-regarded members.

Former Longfield’s School teacher Anne Backhouse, 82, a member for more than 15 years, died last month from complications relating to pulmonary disease.

As a tribute to Mrs Backhouse, a special exhibition of her work will be held alongside the Artweeks event, from May 10 to 18.

Among other pieces on display will be Chris Rothero’s piece called The Letter - a First World War soldier coming out of the trench to read a letter from home. The retired book illustrator said: “He’s covered in muck and dirt, his cut down trench cost, and all his equipment with him.

“I used to do a lot of military work so the reference with the figure is good. I know enough about it to know all the pieces are in the right place.”

The George Muller Studio, The Old Vicarage, Church Street, Bicester, will be open each day between 12pm and 5pm.

The shows are all being put on as part of Artweek.
