THE red cross will be flying throughout Oxfordshire tomorrow to mark St George’s Day.
Following Wallingford’s seventh annual St George’s Day party on Saturday, which featured traditional Morris dancers, more people will be celebrating England’s patron saint day this week.
Oxford City Council and Abingdon Town Council will both hoist the flag over their respective headquarters tomorrow.
In Oxford on Sunday, hundreds of scouts will parade through the city for the annual St George’s Day service.
Beginning at Oxford Castle at 10.30am, they will march to Broad Street for 11.10am.
The White Rabbit on Friars Entry, by Gloucester Green, will hold a St George’s Day folk session tomorrow night.
Saint George was adopted as the patron saint of England after the crusades. He was actually a third century Palestinian Roman soldier, son of a Roman army official and a Palestinian woman.
Legend has it that he slew a dragon, or possibly a crocodile, that was terrorising a Middle Eastern town.
He is also patron saint of Georgia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Russia, Syria and Rio de Janeiro.
