Prof Upton has done a wonderful 'job' as High Sheriff, and I'm sure his successor will prove equally dedicated. It is extraordinary how much these individuals put into the post (which is entirely unpaid and honorary - but involves many significant commitments) and they have my greatest admiration. Oxfordshire has had some outstanding High Sheriffs in recent years, including the marvellous Marie-Jane Barnett of Towersey, and all without exception have thrown themselves into the post with gusto and zeal.

Many of them have targeted disadvantaged youth, and the shortcomings of the education system that leave some trailing in the jobs market. The sort of example given by the Gazette's caption writer is all the more disappointing therefore (unless Mr Stratton really is the first new style High Sherfiff !).
