KEEN runners, firefighters, toddlers and the Prime Minister put on their trainers to run for Sport Relief.

David Cameron and his family joined fundraisers for the mile-long race at Cutteslowe Park yesterday.

The Prime Minister’s wife Samantha proudly wore her bright red Sport Relief onesie for the race in North Oxford, which saw about 300 runners cross the finishing line in the one, three, and six-mile events.

Witney MP Mr Cameron said: “Sport Relief brings together some of the best things about Britain – we are a great sporting nation but also one of the most generous countries when it comes to contributing to good causes.

“This is the third time I have run the Sport Relief mile and I am delighted to have taken part in such a fantastic event that is bringing people across the UK together to get active, raise money and change lives.”

Five-year-old Sean Stuart, from Wallingford, was thrilled to get the chance to meet the Prime Minister.

The St John’s Primary School pupil completed the three-mile course with his mother Trish.

Dad John Stuart took on the challenge of pushing his two-year-old son Angus in a buggy.

Firefighters from Kidlington took part, including Red Watch manager Gary Crone, who wore full uniform and carried breathing apparatus. He said: “It was very warm, but we had a good laugh with everybody and I think all the guys enjoyed it.”

The races in Cutteslowe were opened by BBC South Today presenter Jerome Sale who said: “I was a little bit surprised to see such an ecletic range of runners, from someone dressed as a penguin to a Prime Minister.”

A total of 250 runners completed Sport Relief races at Oxford Brookes University’s Harcourt Hill Campus.

The sports centre also hosted Sport Relief swimming challenges over the weekend, with 80 people joining in.

Laura Hookings, from Wootton near Abingdon, brought sons Tom, eight, and Luca, seven, who braved hailstorms to complete the three-mile course. Mrs Hookings said: “I saw some of the Sport Relief stuff on TV and we decided to help.”

A team from Oxford University Karate Club swapped high kicks for trainers, completing the six-mile course.

Elsewhere competitors took part in tennis challenges at the North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club, Banbury Road, a Sport Relief mile at Willowbrook Leisure Centre in Didcot, the Wantage Mile at Wantage Leisure Centre, a swimathon at Bicester Sports Centre, and a cycle ride at North Moreton, near Didcot.

Six-year-old twins Felicity and Isla Barringer, from South Moreton Primary School, cycled 10 miles for Sport Relief on Saturday and so far have raised £150.
