FLOOD alerts were back in place on several Oxfordshire rivers last night after the heavy rain over the weekend.

The Environment Agency issued flood alerts – the lowest level of its three-stage warning system, which means that flooding is possible and homeowners and business should be on their guard – for six Oxfordshire rivers and brooks.

They cover the River Evenlode from Moreton-in-Marsh to Cassington and the River Glyme at Woodstock and Wootton; the River Cherwell from Charwelton to Upper Heyford, including Banbury; the Cherwell from Lower Heyford to Oxford; the River Ock from Watchfield to Abingdon and the Letcombe Brook at Wantage, Grove and East Hanney; the Langford and Wendlebury brooks and their tributaries from Stratton Audley to the M40 near Merton, including Bicester; and the River Cole along the county boundary with Wiltshire from Shrivenham to Coleshill and Buscot Wick.

The Met Office last night said that more rain was forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday but today was expected to see only some light rain.

Oxfordshire County Council had its gritters out last night and urged drivers to take care on the roads, as temperatures were expected to drop close to zero.
