London Welsh have been deducted five points and fined £15k for fielding an ineligible player.

The Aviva Premiership club, who play their home matches at Oxford's Kassam Stadium, now slip to the foot of the table, two points adrift.

A further five-point deduction is suspended until the end of next season and will only be activated if the club breach regulations again in that period.

The hearing into the case of scrum half Tyson Keats took place on Tuesday, but the panel of Jeremy Summers (chairman), Mark McCafferty and Peter Budge have only just reached a decision.

Welsh were charged with fielding New Zealander Keats ineligibly in “a number” of Aviva Premiership matches this season.

What a travesty! 5 points for a clear and wilfull breach of registration procedures over NINE games. Should have been a minimum of a point per game. What on earth is a 5 point additional penalty suspended all about? Absolute farce.

I agree, demotion to the lower division at least, and exit from the Kasstad as well, then CW can't blame the state of the pitch for his weekly failures.

Anyone else getting déjà vu? Seems the fax machine at the stadium has struck again.

Apparently Welsh are going to appeal. If so, RFU should activate the extra 5 points and double the fine.

Because it occurred over so many games. The club is the employer. Therefore they are responsible for the actions of their employee. The club benefitted on the field from the wrongful registration. Your argument doesn't stack up at all. The club have got off extremely lightly. There is absolutely no logic at all in suspending the additional five points. The penalty should have been a MINIMUM of a point per game if consistency was to be applied.
