A NEW service offering a social space for young people with learning difficulties has launched in Oxford.
Yellow Submarine held its first social evening, Sub-Zero, on Monday. The charity, based at Park End Street organises residential holidays, short breaks, day trips and classes for learning disabled young people and adults aged 18-30.
Eight people attended the first of the new social sessions, taking part in discussion groups and activities.
Deputy manager Caroline Weston, 32, from Thame, said: “It is a social group with an option to talk about training and employment.
“The first session was quite relaxed with pool and computer games.”
Dan Allen, 26, from Witney, said: “I really enjoyed the evening. I liked meeting people and doing the activities. It was a really good night and I’m looking forward to next week.”
In November the charity received £10,800 from the Oxford Mail’s owners Gannett Media through its Gannett Foundation.
The money will go towards a new smoothie and sandwich bar which will open in the spring. Ms Weston added: “The cafe is a work in progress at the moment. But we have had an amazing amount of support from charities and donations.”
The sessions run on Mondays from 6pm to 9pm, at a cost of £3.
