Town centre plea for ‘level playing field’

First published in News

A COUNCIL is under pressure to rethink its parking policy after plans were approved to expand retailers outside Bicester town centre.

As reported, Cherwell district councillors approved plans by Tesco to build a new store, double the size of its existing shop, on land opposite its current site, and to expand Bicester Village.

Now traders say the council must give shoppers two hours’ free parking in the town centre.

The move comes as Cherwell District Council announced the end of a five-week period of free weekend and Monday parking.

It says there are no plans for a similar scheme unless there is more funding. But businesses and campaigners want one.

Tony Douglas, of Bicester Town Centre Group, said: “The council has got to give the town centre two hours’ free parking if it’s got any chance of competing.”

But George Reynolds, Cherwell's deputy leader, said: “Putting on the free parking cost the council around £100,000 in lost revenue.”

I think the parking is a must. Why otherwise would anyone go into town when they can go to the super mega store out of town. Bicester town centre was a lot busier with the free parking over Christmas and New year, it certainly meant I came in and spent money there when I might have gone elsewhere otherwise. 100k or no town centre and no rates being paid therefore no 100k parking charges

I have stopped using Bicester altogether (especially since town centre building work and ridiculous traffic at Bicester Village) and now visit Kidlington instead as it's easier and free parking for an hour. If I want to pay a business check into the bank I don't want to pay to park for 10 mins on top of banking fees. I now use barbers, bank, florists, post office etc there instead....
