A GROUP of media production students teamed up with the council to make a film calling for people in Oxfordshire to recycle more.

The campaign aims to get people recycling their electrical goods this Christmas.

With people buying new and discarding old electrical items over Christmas, the film by four Oxford Brookes University students aims to educate the public in recycling.

Pink recycling bins for small electrical items have been installed at more than 30 points around the county over the last few months by Oxfordshire’s councils and Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP).

Council officers worked with the film department of the university by acting as a client to the students.

Digital Media Production students Matthew Gidman, Nikoletta Incze, Remi Pelta and Muhammad Aftab Khan, interviewed members of the public and council staff for the film.

Matthew Gidman was in charge of post production, music, and the film’s animation characters.

The 24-year-old from Ascott-under-Wychwood, who has since graduated, said: “It was great fun to make. It gave us an opportunity to get valuable experience as part of our course to prepare us for future careers. But more than that, it was rewarding for us to know that the film was going to have a positive impact locally.

“It certainly made us aware, we recycle big time at home. I wish the team all the very best for their future careers and hope they’ll remember their first short film, if they get success in the national box office.”

Cllr David Dodds, chair of OWP, said: “So many more people expect to find information on the internet these days and being able to put useful messages out on YouTube makes our schemes more accessible.

“I hope that this fantastic film by an enthusiastic team of students helps us increase our recycling rates even further.”

OWP spokesman, Paul Mocroft, said: “With everybody getting new electrical presents for Christmas we wanted to launch the campaign to get people recycling. We started to raise awareness now because we have been putting the recycling backs in place over the last few months.”
