EMERGENCY planners last night warned it was possible some householders in Oxfordshire would be advised to leave their homes over the following 24 hours.

The county council said all property owners, particularly those who have property in the floodplain and close to watercourses, were urged to take action to protect property.

A spokesman said: “It is possible that some householders will be advised to leave in the next 24 hours.

“If this happens, you will be advised to leave your home by members of the emergency services or council staff who will visit homes.

“Rest centres will be set up nearby to accommodate people who have been advised to leave their homes. Residents will be told the location of the rest centre at the time they are advised to leave their homes and offered help if necessary.

“There is no need to leave your home unless you are specifically advised to do so. However, people should continue to be vigilant throughout the county.”

An emergency rest centre has been set up at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, in Blackbird Leys Road, in preparation for victims of flooding.

All activities and bookings have been cancelled at the centre while the flood warning remains in the city.
