No decision yet on Argos stores

OXON: Catalogue retailer Argos has revealed it will close or relocate up to 75 stores over the next five years – but it is not known if those in Oxfordshire will be affected.

The business, which has stores in Oxford city centre and on Botley Road, as well as Abingdon, Witney, Didcot, Bicester, Wantage and Banbury, will launch a new digital catalogue by Christmas with circulation of the print version cut as it looks to push sales through the Internet.

But parent firm Home Retail stressed having a “strong local presence” remained important and said the stores to close had not yet been identified.

It plans to axe some of its 739 stores and move shops on to shorter leases to be able to relocate as part of a plan to use its outlets as pick-up points for online orders.

It wouldn't surprise me if both the City Centre and Botley Road stores were to close or relocate. It seems that maximum disruption must be caused to Oxford residents in terms of what they can purchase. If it isn't a coffee, takeaway, or secondhand item, forget it!

Shame

The Abingdon store is very handy, being just off the A34.

I would have thought that the Abingdon and Botley Road stores fitted perfectly with the 'click and collect' strategy and are likely to survive.

More vulnerable are city and town centre stores - although the Oxford one has always seemed very busy. It comes down to rent levels, many of which were set in the boom years on 'upwards only' terms - good for (greedy) investors, the kiss of death for many retailers.

I note that 'Victor's_Friend' has so far declined to state the source of his statement, so I'll put him down as yet another pathetic troll...

The Oxford city centre shop closing would be a disaster. It's the only way many of us without cars have of getting hold of the diverse and obscure stuff Argos seem to stock.

It isn't.

Stating something as fact that may well not be, is, and possibly breaches the OM 'site terms'.

He either has inside information which he is not explaining further, or he is just trying to wind people up - including maybe people who work at or use the stores in question..

The Botley Road store is served by at least 6 different buses stretching as far as Swindon to the west and Headington/woodfarm/ Wheatley to the East, and stopping at the Train Station with connections to the whole of the UK and Europe so a perfect location for those without cars, and it is also served by the very cheap Oxford City Hackney Carriages. As it seems that Oxford City Centre rents are too high for retail, it would not surprise me to see a Costa type food and beverage place move into the New Inn Hall Street site if the accountants deem the store there a drain on the bottom line.
