Death-crash car 'travelling at 80mph'
|
| James McCabe |
TWO men were killed speeding at about 80mph in a car while a friend filmed them on a mobile telephone, a coroner heard today.
James McCabe, of Hemingway Drive, Bicester, and Adam Davis, of Oxlip Leyes, Bicester, died when Mr McCabe's red Peugeot 205 GTi left the B4030 Middleton Stoney Road in Bicester on the night of Monday, August 6.
Both Mr McCabe, 21, and Mr Davis, 19, died from multiple injuries.
Forensic scientist Peter Jennings said: "At the point Mr McCabe went out of control he was travelling in the region of 83mph plus or minus ten per cent, up to 91mph."
Christopher Slatter, of Windle Gardens, Bicester, was in his blue Citroen Saxo with a friend who received a mobile phone call saying there was going to be a "drive past" and that Mr McCabe was going to show off.
He said: "I went to watch. My friend Christina got another call saying they were turning around in Middleton Stoney and coming back and to get ready to film. I filmed it."
A grey Skoda Fabia GTi was waiting at the Chesterton junction to turn right on to the Middleton Stoney Road.
Driver Anna Kennedy, 36, of Akeman Street, Kirtlington, was on her way to Tesco in Bicester.
|
| Adam Davis |
She said she only saw the Peugeot coming towards her as she pulled out of the junction.
She said she completed the turn and Mr McCabe's car went past her and then lost control.
Police investigating the incident arrested Ms Kennedy and charged her with careless driving.
She is due to appear at Banbury Magistrates' Court on May 12.
Oxfordshire Coroner Nicholas Gardiner said: "This has to be regarded as an accidental death.
"I express my sympathies to members of the families and their friends who will be affected by this."

every premature death is regretable and I have sympathy with family and friends of the deceased but everyone round Bicester knows the purpose of the 2 lads journey which was to drive over a road junction at 140 mph in broad daylight and be filmed for YouTube or suchlike with no regard for anyone else's safety. It is a miracle no one else was killed it could have been anyone of us even a police traffic car rushing out of the same junction on its way to an incident as I have seen on many occasions. It is completely beyond me why the poor lady from Kirtlington was ever arrested and accused of dangerous driving you cannot be expected to anticipate cars travelling that fast into a crossroad. The verdict should have been Death by Misadventure.
It's good to know that rumour and spectulation based on hearsay is still alive and well in Bicester. How does everyone round Bicester know their intention, did they all speak to Adam & James before they died? The result of the investigation was that they were travelling at 83mph on a 60mph road. If you had been at the inquest you would be in possession of the full details of the incident rather than the selected facts that the paper chose to print. The only reason the lady was charged with 'careless driving' (NOT dangerous driving) was due to the fact she didn't stop at the give way sign she pulled straight out in front of them.
Yes they did something stupid, but so did she - hence the verdit accidental death.
Always in my thoughts RIP.

Always in my thoughts RIP.
H - its a 50 mph road - thats what the sign says anyway. I am sorry the coroner didnt comment on the morons prepared to encourage their friends by filming them. They have some responsibility for what happened - people don't show off without a willing audience.
