A WANTAGE building firm has started work on a £2.6m sports pavilion for a Summertown prep school.

Family-owned Stepnell was awarded the contract to build the two-storey steel-framed building at Summer Fields in Mayfield Road, after it was put out to tender.

The pavilion will include new changing rooms and cloakrooms, a ground-floor foyer and a multi-purpose first-floor suite, with spectators’ balcony overlooking the school grounds. It will also have solar panels on the roof.

Summer Fields, a boarding and day school for boys aged eight to 13, was founded in 1874.

Stepnell, which specialises in building for schools, says the pavilion should be finished by next summer.

The firm’s contracts manager Dave Mawby said: “This project will create a first-class, modern, multi-use sports pavilion which will further enhance Summer Fields’ excellent facilities.

“Our focus throughout the construction programme will be on working closely with Summer Fields to ensure minimum disruption to the daily life of the school.”
