THE relocation of Witney’s post office to WH Smith’s shop has been “positively” received, according to the newsagent and stationery company.

The former Crown post office in Market Square closed a fortnight ago, with its services moving to a new counter created inside the store in the Woolgate Centre.

Concerns were raised about the suitability of the shop but WH Smith said that a redesign of the aisles and changes to the position of shelves to improve access would address people’s worries Last year, a petition against the change, organised by district councillor Duncan Enright, received 1,200 signatures.

The closure is among 70 being carried out around the country by the Post Office to stem losses from Crown offices, which it manages directly.

WH Smith spokesman Rosalind Cole said: “WH Smith is delighted to be welcoming both new and existing customers to its recently opened post office in Witney.

“Since opening the new branch on March 13, the customer feedback has been very positive, with people highlighting the new layout of the store, improved accessibility to postal services and extended opening hours as key improvements resulting from the move.”
