A TEAM of girls from Malmesbury have cooked up a snackingly good business idea.

The youngsters are planning to set up a cafe in the youth development centre to complement the new indoor skate park.

Simone Snashell, Aston Atkinson Alice McGrory, Jess Kenyon and Megan Castle, members of a joint project involving Christian youth group Somewhere in Between and the local youth advisory group, were due to open yesterday.

Supported by youth worker Sarah McGrory and advisor Gareth Brown and with the help of “go fer” George McGrory, 12, they developed the cafe idea far enough to enable it to run as a pilot scheme for four weeks.

“They have worked their socks off to come up with a business plan. They just got on with it. They have done all the research, made the posters, done the adverts,” said Sarah. “I am so incredibly proud of them.”

The team of 15-year-olds carried out its own market research among the town’s teenagers to find out what they should be stocking, they plan to do all their own cake baking and they have dealt with Wiltshire Council officers to ensure they meet health and hygiene regulations. The girls also plan to make it Fairtrade where possible.

The cafe will be aimed at 11 to 14-year olds mainly at first. “But they are hoping to open it across the board to all young people,” explained Mrs McGrory.

If the project, which has been offered backing by the Malmesbury Area Board and Malmesbury and the Villages Community Area Partnership, proves to be a success it will return again when the new school term starts in September.
