SNOW: Sledge smash drama

Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance was called to Shotover Hill after a woman crashed her sledge into a tree.

The woman, in her early 40s, was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital with suspected fractures to her pelvis at about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, police urged people not to try walking on the frozen Oxford Canal by Castle Quay Shopping Centre. Children have been seen in the middle of the canal and officers have been called out several times as people attemped to walk on the ice.

PC Paul Froggatt said: “I can’t emphasise enough how dangerous this sort of activity is. No matter how solid the ice might look, do not even take a chance.”

I think she definitely needs "driving lessons".
I remember when I was a kid in the 60's living on Fairview Estate, we kids used to toboggan off what is today the green of the 3rd fairway of Southfield Golf Course. It was locally called "Sledge Hill". The green was in those days quite elevated and we used to have races to see who could get across the one-sled wide "railway sleeper" bridge over the brook at the bottom. The only ones to miss their target were those generally nudged off the bridge into the water by another racer, not by any lack of steering ability. Ah the joys of childhood!!

I should also have added best wishes for a speedy recovery.

When heading towards a tree on a sledge, general advice is to bail out! Trees are big and hurt!
